When to Use Ice Versus Heat

10/23/2017

I've covered this topic before, but I feel that it is very important to talk about.  Everyone gets confused on when to ice and when to heat.  If you ask 5 professionals, you'll get 5 different answers.  Therefore, I will attempt to put it in the simplest terms possible.  Just remember that when the pain gets worse, you use ice.  I recommend 3 times a day for 3 days.  If you still have pain, it doesn't hurt to do it longer.  If you ice more that 3 times a day, it will not hurt you.  The only time ice will hurt you is if you don't put a barrier between the ice pack and your skin. Also, I don't recommend wrapping the ice pack in a towel.  Towels are too thick.  They don't allow the cold to penetrate the skin.  Wrapping a paper towel or t-shirt around it is optimal.  That way, the skin can get cold enough.
If the pain is your normal, achy, stiff pain, heat works better.
If you're an athlete, or exercising, heat before practice or performance helps warm up the body.  It assists in getting the body prepared for the activity and demand on the muscles, ligaments, joints, etc.  You can then, ice afterwords to control the inflammation caused by the activity.
So just remember, when the pain gets worse, ice.  If It's the every day stiffness, heat.
And as always, if you have questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact me.

Happy, Healthy Holidays

12/20/2014

Tis the season to be stressed out!  The shopping, deadlines for the ending year, goals for the new year, holiday parties, indulging in food and beverage, exposure to influenza, bronchitis......the list goes on.  This is the time when we need a strong immune system and the stress of the holidays zaps us of that.  Our diets are worse, so we aren't taking in the proper nutrition. We are running ourselves into the ground and lowering our immunity even more.

There are two crucial systems that we need to support at this time. The first is the adrenal system.   It is the system affected by the "Fight or Flight" part of our bodies.  The problem being is that we are so stressed that the adrenals  become overburdened.  The second system is the Immune system.  If we are run down, our immunity drops and allows the bacteria, viruses and fungi to take hold and cause illness.

I use Standard Process and MediHerb products in my office to supply adrenal support for our hectic lives.  I also offer long-term and short term support products for the immune system, which include upper respiratory and lower respiratory support.

If you are interested in improving your health this holiday season, feel free to call and schedule an appointment.

Happy, healthy holidays to and yours!

The First Chiropractic Patient Didn't Have Low Back Pain or Headaches

10/14/2014

The first Chiropractic patient didn't have  Carpal Tunnel issues, Sciatica, neuralgia, headaches or any other pain.  The first Chiropractic patient, Harvey Lillard, was deaf.  And with the first Chiropractic adjustment,  performed by D.D. Palmer, he was able to hear.
So, the next time your getting adjusted, don't just think about your pain and discomfort.  Think about how the Chiropractic adjustment is  changing every organ, tissue and cell in your body.  It is removing the interference to the nervous system, so that your body can function more efficiently.

Everyone should see the movie Cereal Killers.  Basically it is a new way, which is a very old way, of eating.  It stands in the face of the food pyramid, high carbohydrate, sugar and low fat diets.  A 41 year old man decides to experiment on himself by drastically changing his diet  to a high fat, high protein, recommended vegetables and fruits, and no sugar or carbohydrates plan.  He stays on the diet for 28 days, while being tracked by doctors, who run tests like blood work , body fat percentages and resting metabolic rate.  The results will surprise you!  It is a must watch!
